When you install a software on your computer, it usually creates several folders with files related to it. After some time, when you are done with the application, you simple uninstall it. Very often, when you uninstall an application, it leaves empty folders behind. Sure, empty folders are apparently harmless – it merely takes any space on your hard disk. However, it becomes annoying to see all these empty folders, especially when you come across a huge list of empty sub folders within a directory. Manually locating and deleting these empty folders might become a daunting task if you have been installing/uninstalling software for years on your machine.

This is where the application Remove Empty Directories aka RED comes to the rescue. This free tool will scan your hard disk for empty directories/folders and delete them automatically. It can also detect directories with 0 KB files and mark them as empty.
It will work on almost any Windows operating system, including Windows Xp,Vista or 7.
Another reason to consider deleting empty folders is because it boosts your computer’s file indexing speed by not looking for files in directories that is empty or with 0 KB files.
Installing and Using Remove Empty Directories
After installing this utility, select the partition that you would like it to search for empty folders or directories. I recommend you to check in all your hard drives ( if you have more than one attached to your computer) for a cleaner and faster computer.
Clicking on the Scan Folders button will make the program to look for empty folders and display it in a tree-like structure. Folders marked in red means that they will be deleted when you click on the Delete folders button.
You can further configure the application in the Settings tab for an advanced file deletion.
Overall, the application is fast and easy to use. However, an option to exclude specific directories from the tree-like structure would be better instead of going to the settings tab and entering each excluded directories manually. Unfortunately, it is not available for mac and Linux users.
